SWORDS AND SAND(ALS)

QUO VADIS (1951)

An epip classic based on a 1895 novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz.

Returning to Nero's Rome, General Marcus Vinicius (Robert Taylor) meets and falls in love with Lygia (Deborah Kerr, "From Here to Eternity", "The King and I", "Julius Caesar"), a beautiful Christian hostage of Rome. Marcus gets the emperor (Peter Ustinov, "Spartacus") to give her to him for services rendered. Lygia resents this but cannot help falling in love with Marcus anyway. As Nero's hatred for Christians grows, Nero's wife, Poppaea (Patricia Laffan), infatuated with Marcus but rejected by him, has Lygia tied to a wooden stake in the arena while Marcus, desperate to save Lygia, is tied to the spectator's box and forced to watch.

Ladies, hold your breaths for:

* Young Robert Taylor (b. 1911, "Camille", "Ivanhoe", "Knights of the Round Table")
